Eurasian Jay Attempting to Tear Meat from Carrion in Winter

Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius) filmed in Slovakia.

Footage description

A close-up of a wild Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) feeding from the remains of a roe deer concealed beneath snow in a winter woodland in Slovakia. The jay repeatedly pulls at a large piece of exposed tissue in an attempt to tear off a portion and carry it away. After several unsuccessful attempts, the bird abandons the food and flies away. The footage documents natural scavenging and opportunistic feeding behaviour by a corvid during winter.
