A male stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) crawls across the side of a sunlit tree trunk in woodland in Slovakia. The beetle moves steadily over the deeply textured bark, displaying its characteristic enlarged mandibles as it progresses from the brightly illuminated side of the trunk toward the darker shaded area behind the tree. The close view combines natural locomotion with a clear contrast between the beetle, weathered bark and softly blurred green woodland background.
